About Us
The Lilac Foundation is a nonprofit organisation that actively strives to acknowledge unrecognised women who have made extraordinary contributions to the wider Canberra community. We plan to erect plaques of women and their contributions around Lake Burley Griffin.
The Lilac Foundation was first established by six students from Canberra Girls Grammar School, with an idea to take one more step towards gender equality. The group of students were appalled by the fact that Marion Griffin, who worked tirelessly with her husband, Walter Burley Griffin, was not credited for her contribution to the layout of the city. Her sex put her at a disadvantage which meant that her husband had to submit their plans in his name only. Today Marion is still not widely known around Canberra, along with other high achieving women. However, The Lilac Foundation plans to change that by recognising these memorable women and their contributions to their communities. |
